How to submit to AlternativeTo: cost, link and review time
AlternativeTo describes itself as a free service for finding alternatives to software, and its robots.txt disallows the /outgoing/ path that the Official Website link uses. The link carried rel="noopener" in an archived copy from 2026-10-06, so it is not nofollow but is routed through that path. Expect discovery traffic from alternative pages, not link equity.

How to submit to AlternativeTo
- Sign in or join AlternativeTo, since the About page invites users to join the site.
- Open the add application form at alternativeto.net/manage/new-app, which the live site blocked us from viewing.
- Enter the application details, such as name, description, platforms and cost or license.
- Add the alternatives your application replaces, since pages are built around alternatives.
- Submit and wait for the community and moderators to review the page.
Is AlternativeTo worth it?
AlternativeTo is worth listing on if people search for alternatives to a larger product in your category. The About page says the site gives alternatives to software people already know, and that recommendations come from people who use the software, not from the companies that make it. That makes it a fit for products with obvious incumbents.
The return is discovery. Pages on the archived copy show likes, alternative counts, an overall rating and comments, which is the surface you are joining. Nothing we read describes a launch day or ranking. The archived Notion page, for example, showed 691 likes and a rating of 4.1.
What to prepare before you submit to AlternativeTo
Prepare a precise description and the names of the products you replace. The archived Notion page shows the structure: a short description, cost or license, application type, origin, platforms and a list of alternatives. Match those fields with accurate information. The archived page also showed an Official Partner label for a sponsor, so paid placements exist on some pages.
Prepare for community involvement. The About page says users can join in to make recommendations better, and the archived page notes that reviews from new or low activity accounts are shown but not counted in the app rating. Keep descriptions factual and avoid marketing language that other users might revert.
AlternativeTo trade-offs
The main trade-off is the link. The Official Website link goes through alternativeto.net/outgoing/, and the site's own robots.txt, which we read live, contains Disallow: /outgoing/ under User-agent: *. A crawler that follows robots.txt will not see the destination, so do not plan on link value.
You also share control of the page. The About page says recommendations and alternatives come from users, so your listing can change after you publish. We could not read the submission form, moderation policy or any fee page because the live site blocked automated requests. Check the live page after publishing, since the account tools were out of reach for us.
How we checked
We read AlternativeTo’s own submission, pricing and policy pages on 2026-11-01, and for the link attribute we read the raw HTML of a live public listing rather than relying on the platform’s description. Listing checked: web.archive.org/web/20261006165101/https://alternativeto.net/software/notion/about/. Prices and rules change; the date at the top is the last time each fact on this page was checked. Common questions
Is the AlternativeTo backlink dofollow?
Not in a useful way. In an archived copy from 2026-10-06 the Official Website link had rel="noopener", but it points to an /outgoing/ path that robots.txt disallows for all crawlers. Treat it as providing no link value.
Is AlternativeTo free?
The About page calls AlternativeTo a free service for finding alternatives. We did not find a listing fee on pages we could read, but the submission form itself was blocked to us.
How long does it take to be listed?
No review time was available. The live submission pages returned a verification check to automated requests, so we could not read any stated timeline.
Why list on AlternativeTo at all?
Because the site is built around alternatives to known software, so a page that is accurately listed as an alternative can reach people comparing options. That is an inference from its About page, not a stated traffic figure.
Can I control my AlternativeTo page?
Only partly. The About page says every page, alternative and almost every recommendation comes from users, not from the company or the product maker. Expect other people to add alternatives, likes and comments after your page goes live.
