ssh.place is a shared pixel canvas that operates entirely over SSH, allowing users to contribute to a collective artwork in real time. The tool requires no account creation, software installation, or configuration—participants simply initiate an SSH connection to begin drawing. It serves artists, developers, and creative collaborators seeking a minimal-friction creative experience. The canvas spans 200×60 cells with a 16-color palette selectable through numbered keys or tab cycling. Each user faces a 15-second cooldown between placements, with the restriction tied to their SSH key rather than session, preventing cooldown reset attempts. The interface uses standard keyboard navigation (arrow keys, WASD, or Vim bindings), and the drawing surface is viewable through a web interface while modifications occur exclusively via SSH. The project is open source and completely free to use.
