Launch guides
Is it worth launching on Product Hunt in 2026?
Short answer: yes, once and deliberately, if your product is live, usable without a waitlist, and in a category Product Hunt features. Its own help pages say it does not feature waitlist-only products, directories, templates, boilerplates, courses or services, and that a product needs two months and a significant update between launches. Do not launch there for the backlink: the Visit website link carries rel="ugc". Launch there for the day's audience, after rehearsing on smaller boards.

This page is for founders deciding whether, and when, Product Hunt belongs in their launch. Every Product Hunt rule it quotes comes from Product Hunt’s own help centre. Toolfound publishes this page and is a row in its comparison table.
The decision rule
Product Hunt is worth it when your product fits its featuring guidelines and you can show up for 24 hours with real users. Go through these five checks; if any answer is no, launch elsewhere first.
- Is the product live and usable today? Product Hunt features “products that are currently available” and states that products that only offer an email sign-up are not eligible for the homepage.
- Is it a category Product Hunt features? Its featuring guidelines list what it does not feature: waitlisted products (unless immediate access is provided), directories or lists, templates, boilerplates, podcasts, courses, reports, events, books, services, commerce sites, deal sites, off-topic submissions, most Kickstarter projects and hardware without a prominent digital component.
- Can you be present all day? Launches go live at 12:01 AM PST and the homepage updates on points from upvotes and engagement.
- Do you have real users who will comment? Product Hunt asks makers not to request upvotes from friends or family, and says doing so may drop the product in the ranks or remove it from the homepage.
- Have you rehearsed the pitch elsewhere? Product Hunt asks for two months between launches of the same product or company, plus a significant update. You get few attempts, so the first one should not be your practice run.
If all five are yes, launch there as the finale of a sequence. If your product is a template, a directory, a course or a pre-launch waitlist, the platforms in the next sections fit better.
Product Hunt’s current launch rules, from its own help pages
Product Hunt’s help centre sets hard limits that shape the plan more than any tactic does. As of 2026-11-01:
- Account access. You need a personal account; company or branded accounts cannot post, vote or comment. A newly created account waits one week before it can post, unless you subscribe to the newsletter for immediate access.
- Scheduling. The submission flow offers Schedule or Create Draft (Launch Now was replaced). You can schedule a launch for a day within 30 days of the current date. Drafts and scheduled posts are not indexed and cannot be upvoted until they go live.
- Hunt limits. One person can schedule up to 2 hunts per day.
- Listing fields. Description within 260 characters; square thumbnail, 240x240 recommended (GIF under 3MB); gallery images at 1270x760, with 2 or more needed; video by YouTube link only.
- Ranking. The homepage ranks by points, and one upvote does not always equal one point; featured status, engagement and the authenticity of votes all count. Product of the Day, Week and Month go to the highest points in each period.
- Featuring. The homepage is curated; not every submission is featured, and featuring decisions are described as final in the vast majority of cases. A product that was not featured can be resubmitted after six months.
- Relaunching. Two months between posts for the same product, company or root domain, plus a significant update; new UIs and pricing changes do not count.

What the link is worth
The Product Hunt link passes no link value, so the reason to launch there is the audience, not SEO. When our dataset row was verified on 2026-09-06, the Visit website link carried rel="ugc" on both the product page and the launch post. A ugc link is a user-generated-content hint to search engines, not an editorial endorsement. If links are your goal, the dofollow directories guide lists the platforms where we verified a followed link on a live listing page.
Product Hunt vs Hacker News vs BetaList
Each of the three is the best choice for a different product, and the deciding factor is what you can show on the day. The comparison below uses the same verified data as the launch guide; a dash means we could not verify the value. Toolfound publishes this comparison and is a row in it.
| Platform | Cost | Dofollow link | Timing | Best for | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product Hunt | Free | No (rel="ugc") | Schedule up to 30 days ahead; 2 months between launches | Consumer and prosumer products with a polished story | 2026-09-06 (link), 2026-11-01 (rules) |
| Hacker News (Show HN) | Free | Conditional (mixed rel attributes, no documented rule) | Post when the product can be tried | Technical products with something genuinely interesting to show | 2026-09-06 (link), 2026-11-01 (rules) |
| BetaList | Paid (plans shown in the submission form; full refund if not selected) | Yes, if featured (stated in BetaList's FAQ) | Timeline depends on the plan | Pre-launch startups collecting early adopters | 2026-11-01 |
| Uneed | Free, with paid fast-track ($14.99) and Skip the line ($39.99) | Free launches earn it at an upvote score of 20; guaranteed on Skip the line (stated on its pricing page) | Free date assigned at the back of the line | Indie makers who want a calmer daily board | 2026-11-01 |
| ToolfoundOur platform | Free; Priority $29 once for an earlier date | Yes, on every verified listing, never conditioned on a badge or link back | Free dates at least 7 days ahead, 5 free launches a day | Agent-run launches and a permanent, dofollow listing | 2026-11-01 |
How to read it: Show HN’s rules ask for something people can run or hold, with no landing pages or sign-up walls, so it fits working technical products. BetaList is the only one of the five aimed at the stage before public launch. Product Hunt has the largest general audience of the five and the most rules. Toolfound is the newest board in the table; what it adds is a public queue date before you commit, a permanent dofollow page, and a launch your agent can run over MCP.
Alternatives to Product Hunt for indie hackers
The alternatives that fit indie products best are the calmer daily and weekly boards, used in the weeks before a Product Hunt launch rather than instead of it. The Product Hunt alternatives guide compares them row by row; in short:
- Daily boards with smaller rooms: Uneed, Toolfound, Fazier and PitchWall. Less crowded days mean a good product with a small push has a real chance at the top spots.
- Longer windows: Microlaunch runs a month-long launch window; Peerlist and DevHunt run weekly cycles, which suit products without a day-one audience.
- Communities for feedback: r/SideProject and Indie Hackers, where the thread is the value.
- Pre-launch: BetaList and Betabound, strictly before public availability.
The stacked sequence in the launch guide puts communities in week one, these boards in week two, Show HN in week three and Product Hunt in week four. The SaaS launch checklist lists each platform’s lead time, and the launch directory cost guide lists every published price.
How we know
Every Product Hunt rule on this page is quoted from Product Hunt’s own help centre, read on 2026-11-01 (articles linked above). The Show HN rules come from the Show HN guidelines on news.ycombinator.com, read the same day. The link attributes come from our dataset, where each verdict was read on a live or archived listing page and dated (Product Hunt and Hacker News on 2026-09-06). BetaList and Uneed facts come from their FAQ and pricing pages on 2026-11-01. We did not use traffic estimates from third parties, and the order of the table reflects audience fit, not payment.
Toolfound publishes this page and is a row in its table. The rules we apply to ourselves are on the methodology page.
Common questions
Is Product Hunt still worth it in 2026?
Yes, once and deliberately, for a live, usable product in a category it features, launched after you have rehearsed on smaller boards and with real users ready to comment.
Is the Product Hunt backlink dofollow?
No. The Visit website link carries rel="ugc" on the product page and the launch post (verified 2026-09-06), so it passes no link value.
How often can I launch on Product Hunt?
Product Hunt asks for at least two months between posts for the same product, company or root domain, plus a significant update. A product that was not featured can be resubmitted after six months.
Which is better for a SaaS, Product Hunt or Hacker News?
Show HN fits technical products people can try immediately, with no sign-up wall. Product Hunt fits polished products with a clear story and users who will comment. Many founders use both, on different days.
Can I launch on Product Hunt with a waitlist?
Product Hunt states that products that only offer an email sign-up are not eligible for the homepage, and waitlisted products are featured only if immediate access is provided.
Toolfound gives you a free launch date you can see before you commit, and a permanent dofollow listing that stays after the day ends: submit a product. Related guides: Product Hunt alternatives · SaaS launch checklist · what launch directories cost.
