Make your site easy to read for agents
llms.txt generator and validator
An llms.txt file is a short Markdown index at the root of your site that points a reader, human or machine, at the pages worth reading first. Fill in the form to get a file in the format published at llmstxt.org, or switch to the validator and paste a file you already serve.
Everything happens in this page. Your text is not uploaded, saved or fetched from anywhere, and the validator never visits your site.
Your llms.txt
# Acme Notes
> Acme Notes is a note-taking app for small teams. It syncs across devices, supports Markdown, and costs $5 per user per month.
## Docs
- [Quick start](https://example.com/docs/quick-start): create a workspace and invite a teammate
- [API reference](https://example.com/docs/api): endpoints, authentication and rate limits
## Optional
- [Changelog](https://example.com/changelog): release notes by version
No problems found. Publish it at /llms.txt on your domain.
How to use it
- Name the site. Enter the site or product name and a one or two sentence summary of what it is and who it is for.
- Add the pages that matter. Group links under section headings such as Docs, Product or Policies. Give each link a name, a full URL and a short note on what the page answers.
- Copy or download. Review the file shown beside the form, then copy it or download it as llms.txt.
- Publish at the site root. Serve the file at /llms.txt on your domain with a 200 status, then paste the live contents into the validator to confirm the structure.
What the generator and validator check
The generator writes the elements the llmstxt.org format defines, in its order: an H1 with the name (the only required element), an optional blockquote summary, optional free-form detail text with no headings, then H2 sections that each hold a Markdown list of links written as [name](url) with an optional colon and a note. A section called Optional is how the format marks links that can be skipped when a shorter context is needed.
The validator reads the file you paste and reports errors, warnings and notes with line numbers. Errors are things that break the format: an empty file, HTML served instead of Markdown, a missing or second H1, or a link that is not an absolute http or https URL in a recognised list item. Warnings are things that weaken the file: no summary, no sections, an empty section, a duplicate link, a list item that is not in link form, or headings below H2.
Neither mode judges whether your links are good choices, and neither fetches a URL. A file that passes is well formed. It is not a promise that any search engine or assistant will read it or rank anything because of it; the llms.txt guide on this site states what is and is not known.
Questions
What is an llms.txt file?
It is a Markdown file served at /llms.txt that gives a short, curated map of a site: a name, a one or two sentence summary, and lists of links with notes. It was proposed in 2024 and is described at llmstxt.org. It is a community proposal, not an Internet standard.
Where does the file go?
At the root of the domain, so it is reachable at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Serve it with a 200 status as plain text or Markdown in UTF-8. A redirect to an HTML page or a soft 404 that returns your site shell will be flagged by the validator.
Will an llms.txt improve my rankings or get me cited by assistants?
No search engine or AI provider that we know of has published a commitment to use it for ranking or citation. Some tools read it when pointed at a site. Treat it as a cheap, optional index, not a ranking lever.
Should I list every page?
No. The file is useful because it is short. List the few pages that explain what the product is, what it costs, how to use it and the policies, and put secondary pages under an Optional section.
What does the validator not check?
It does not request your URLs, so it cannot tell whether a link is broken, redirected or blocked by robots.txt. It checks structure only. Use the redirect checker on this site for a link you are unsure about.
Does anything I paste leave my browser?
No. Generation and validation are plain JavaScript in this page. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
