Know where you stand after you submit

Directory submission tracker

Submitting a product to a dozen places is easy. Remembering which ones replied, which went live and which still link to you a month later is not. Type the places you are submitting to, set a status for each, and the tracker shows what is overdue, builds a tracking link for each place and gives you a short weekly summary to paste into a post.

Your list is saved only in this browser. Nothing is uploaded unless you press Check on a live listing, which sends that one listing address and your domain to a server that fetches the page and forgets it. The tool does not come with a list of places: you type the names.

Used to build tracking links and to look for your link on a live listing.

How to use it

  1. Enter your site and campaign. Type your own site address and a campaign name. They are used to build a tracking link for each place and to look for your link on live listings.
  2. Add the places you submit to. Type each place by name. Set its status as planned, submitted, live or rejected, add the date, the listing address and any notes. Moving an entry to submitted fills the date and sets a follow-up seven days later.
  3. Work the overdue list. Entries that are planned or submitted and whose follow-up date has passed appear at the top. Follow up, then change the date or the status.
  4. Verify live listings. For each live entry with a listing address, press Check. You get the HTTP status and whether the page still contains a link to your domain, and whether that link is marked nofollow, ugc or sponsored.
  5. Export and report. Export the list as CSV to back it up or open it in a spreadsheet, and copy the weekly summary into a build-in-public post.

How the tracker works

The list lives in your browser's local storage. If storage is blocked or cleared, the tool still works for the session but the list is not kept, so export a CSV now and then. Import reads the same CSV format the export writes: name, status, submitted_on, listing_url, tracking_link, follow_up, notes. Dates must be YYYY-MM-DD, and rows with an unknown status or a bad date are skipped and reported. Cells that start with a character spreadsheets treat as a formula are written with a leading apostrophe on export and cleaned on import, so opening the file in a spreadsheet cannot run anything.

Status moves follow a simple order: planned goes to submitted, submitted goes to live or rejected, and a rejected or live entry can be reopened. Follow-up dates are plain calendar arithmetic on dates without a time zone, so seven days after the 28th of December is the 4th of January. An entry is overdue when its follow-up date is before today and it is still planned or submitted.

Tracking links use the same shape the campaign URL linter checks: the utm_source is the place name in lowercase with underscores, utm_medium is directory, and utm_campaign is your campaign name in the same style. Existing query parameters and the hash are kept and any older utm values are replaced.

The live-link check is a server request, so it is guarded. The address must be http or https, must be a public host (private, loopback, link-local, metadata and IPv6 local addresses are refused, and every redirect is checked again), has a 5 second timeout, a 1 MB cap on what is read and at most 3 redirects. It is limited to 20 checks per 10 minutes per visitor, with a cap on checks running at once. The result is a snapshot: pages that build their links with scripts after loading, or that block automated requests, can show no link even when a visitor sees one. Treat a missing link as a reason to look, not as proof.

Questions

Does the tracker include a list of directories to submit to?

No. You type the names of the places you choose. The tool only keeps your own record.

Where is my list stored?

In your browser's local storage on this device. It is not sent anywhere, and it does not sync between devices. Use Export CSV to back it up or move it.

What does the Check button send?

The listing address and your domain, to a Toolfound server that fetches the page, looks for links to your domain and returns the result. The page content is not stored.

Why does a live page show no link to me?

The page may add its links with scripts, may link through a redirect on another domain, or may have blocked the automated request. Open it in your browser to be sure. A listing marked nofollow, ugc or sponsored is reported as linking, with that note.

How are follow-up dates chosen?

When you move an entry to submitted and it has no follow-up yet, the tracker sets one seven days after the submitted date. You can change it to anything.

Can I use the CSV in a spreadsheet?

Yes. The file has a header row and one entry per line. Anything that could be read as a formula is protected with a leading apostrophe, which the importer removes again.
